Your child may have ADD/ADHD. The good news is professionals have learned that ADD/ADHD is only as medically “serious” as myopia. It’s treatment is as nearly straightforward as vision testing and eyeglasses. Both ADD/ADHD and myopia lead to profoundly negative outcomes if unrecognized and untreated. The difference is, they don’t blame you for not seeing well. Although most educators and parents recognize the most obvious symptoms of ADD/ADHD in children there is a fourth “secret symptom”-Insensitivity to Consequences –that leads to countless replays of the same tired dialogue: KNOWLEDGE IS THE MOST POWERFUL TREATMENT FOR ADD/ADHD. Effective combined treatment (medication management plus behavioral interventions) is best for combined ADHD and associated disorders. ADHD has profound and impairing effects on the course, development, and outcome of afflicted individuals, and is not just normal childhood behavior. 30-80% retain the diagnosis (and its associated impairment) into adolescence and adulthood. At Child and Family Consultants our methodology is to inform kids and parents that “Medication is the single most effective stand-alone treatment, but it is the fifth treatment. The first four are the parents (and child, when possible) becoming expert in ADD/ADHD, behavior management, medications, and educational advocacy” Undiagnosed and untreated ADD/ADHD presents major challenges to balanced living and productivity in academic, occupational and personal areas of life. |
